  • During the week ending 7 December 2016, rainfall was recorded in parts of northern, central and eastern Australia.
  • Modelled upper layer soil moisture for November 2016 was close to average across much of Australia.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that rainfall totals exceeding 25mm are forecast for parts of all states and territories except South Australia.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased by 173 gigalitres (GL) during the week ending 8 December 2016.
  • Australian beef exports have declined markedly in 2016–17 reflecting the contraction in cattle slaughter.
  • Total Australian winter crop production is forecast to increase by 32 per cent in 2016–17 to a record high of 52.4 million tonnes.
