Summary of key issues:

  • During the week ending 6 January 2016, significant rainfall was recorded across eastern and central Australia.
  • Heavy rainfall across low lying areas in New South Wales close to Newcastle, the Lower Hunter region.
  • A number of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indicators suggest that the 2015-16 El Niño has peaked in recent weeks.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) decreased by 203 gigalitres (GL) during the week ending 7 January 2016.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$210 a tonne in the week ending 5 January 2016.
  • The world sugar indicator price (Intercontinental Exchange, nearby futures, No. 11 contract) averaged US14.8 cents a pound in the week ending 6 January 2016.
  • Australian grain, livestock and fruit and vegetable indicator prices are not available this week due to market closures over the Christmas and New Year period.
