Summary of key issues:

  • In the week ending 24 September 2014, rainfall in excess of 15 millimetres was recorded across central and eastern Queensland, the far northwest of New South Wales, parts of eastern South Australia, western Tasmania and southern Western Australia.
  • Widespread falls in excess of 25 millimetres were recorded across central and eastern Queensland during the week ending 24 September 2014.
  • The one-month rainfall outlook for October 2014 indicates that drier than normal conditions are more likely across much of eastern and northern Australia.
  • The three-month rainfall outlook (October to December 2014) indicates that drier than normal conditions are more likely across broad areas of eastern, central and northern Australia.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) decreased this week by 78 gigalitres (GL) and are at 67 per cent of total capacity.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$274 a tonne in the week ending 23 September 2014.
    The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) rose by around 3 per cent in the week ending 24 September 2014 to $329 a tonne.
  • The Queensland young cattle indicator price (330 – 400 kg live weight C3) averaged 376 cents a kilogram in the week ending 19 September 2014.
  • The saleyard indicator price of lambs fell in all states in the week ending 19 September 2014, compared with the previous week.
  • The wholesale prices of selected fruit and vegetables were generally lower in the week ending 20 September 2014.
