Summary of key issues:

  • Rainfall was recorded across large areas in the week ending 17 December 2014.
  • Farm infrastructure and livestock have been destroyed as bushfires, sparked mainly by lightning earlier in the week, burn across central and north-eastern Victoria.
  • The January rainfall outlook suggests that drier than average conditions are more likely over much of the northern and south-western Western Australia.
  • The rainfall outlook for the period January to March 2015 indicates that drier than average conditions are more likely across parts of western and north-eastern Australia.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) decreased this week by 293 gigalitres (GL) and are at 55 per cent of total capacity.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$287 a tonne in the week ending 16 December 2014.
    The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) was $318 a tonne in the week ending 17 December 2014, around 1 per cent higher than the previous week.
  • The Queensland young cattle indictor price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 371 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in the week ending 12 December 2014.
  • Changes in the saleyard indicator price of lamb (18–22kg fat score 2–4) were mixed across the states in the week ending 12 December 2014, compared with the previous week.
