Summary of key issues:

  • During the week ending 8 July 2015, rainfall was mainly restricted to southern areas of Australia.
  • Maximum temperatures were mostly average over much of Australia during the week ending 7 July 2015.
  • Relative upper layer soil moisture for June 2015 was average or above average across parts of central and eastern Australia.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that rainfall is likely to be restricted to southern Australia and parts of Australia’s western and eastern coastlines.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that the 2015 El Niño is likely to strengthen further in the coming weeks, largely due to recent tropical cyclone activity.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased this week by 34 gigalitres (GL) and are at 42 per cent of total capacity.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$254 a tonne in the week ending 7 July 2015.
  • The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) was $346 a tonne in the week ending 8 July 2015.
  • The Queensland young cattle indicator price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 522 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in the week ending 3 July 2015.
  • The Victorian lamb indicator price (18–22kg fat score 2–4) averaged 612 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in the week ending 3 July 2015.
