Summary of key issues:

  • In the week ending 22 October 2014, rainfall in excess of 15 millimetres was mainly restricted to Western Australia, western Tasmania and isolated areas along Australia’s east coast.
  • In the week ending 10 December 2014, rainfall was recorded across large areas of northern and eastern Australia.
  • A persistent low pressure trough has delivered significant rainfall totals to much of northern and eastern Australia over the past two weeks.
  • Maximum temperatures in parts of western and central Australia reached between 4 and 8 degrees above the average during the week ending 9 December 2014.
  • The locust population remained at widespread medium densities in many regions during November.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) decreased this week by 93 gigalitres (GL) and are at 57 per cent of total capacity.
    The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$287 a tonne in the week ending 9 December 2014.
  • The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) was $316 a tonne in the week ending 10 December 2014, around 4 per cent lower than the previous week.
  • The Queensland young cattle indictor price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 368 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in the week ending 5 December 2014.
  • Changes in the saleyard indicator price of lamb (18–22kg fat score 2–4) were mixed across the states in the week ending 5 December 2014.
