Summary of key issues

  • At least 15 millimetres of rainfall was recorded across most of the Western Australian wheat-sheep zone during the past week. Rainfall of between 15 and 50millimetres was recorded across most of the South Australian, New South Wales and Victorian wheatsheep zones.
  • These falls are likely to assist crop development and grain fill, particularly in areas
  • Much of Queensland received little to no rainfall during the past week, and with no rainfall forecast forQueensland during the coming week, there will be little relief for moisture-stressed cropsin a number of regions.
  • Following on from an exceptionally warm start to spring, both maximum and minimum temperatures over the past week have continued to be up to 8 degrees above average in parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin have increased by 105 gigalitres this week but remained at 83 per cent of total capacity.
  • The Australian canola indicator price (Portland, Victoria) averaged $485 a tonne in the week ending 16 September 2013, compared with $510 a tonne in the previous week.
  • The world cotton indicator price (the Cotlook ‘A’ index) averaged US90.2 cents a pound in the week ending 18 September 2013, around 1 per cent higher than in the previous week.
  • The Queensland young cattle indicator price (330 – 400 kg live weight C3) fell by 5 per cent in the week ending 13 September 2013 to average 287 cents a kilogram.
