Summary of key issues:

  • For the week ending 5 July 2016, maximum temperatures were close to average across most of Australia.
  • June 2016 was the second-wettest June on record, with well above average rainfall recorded across most of Australia.
  • Relative upper layer soil moisture for June 2016 was well above average across much of Australia.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that rainfall is mainly expected across the southern states.
  • The tropical Pacific Ocean remains in a neutral ENSO state, and climate models suggest the development of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole during winter 2016.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased by 406 gigalitres (GL) during the week ending 7 July 2016.
