Summary of key issues:

  • During the week ending 2 September 2015, scattered rainfall was recorded across SA and isolated areas of central and eastern Australia.
  • This week’s rainfall received over much of the winter crop growing region in Queensland is likely to provide timely moisture for the growth and development of crops and pastures.
  • August 2015 rainfall was generally average, but was highly variable across the continent.
  • Upper level soil moisture at the end of August 2015 were predominately average to above average across most cropping regions in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.
  • The bushfire and natural hazards CRC has released its seasonal bushfire outlook for the 2015–16 fire season.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased during the week ending 3 September 2015.
  • The Global Dairy Trade (GDT) weighted average price of whole milk powder rose by 12 per cent to US$2078 a tonne on 1 September 2015.
  • The young cattle indictor price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 557 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Queensland in the week ending 28 August 2015.
  • The lamb indicator price (18–22kg fat score 2–4) averaged 580 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Victoria in the week ending 28 August 2015.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$212 a tonne in the week ending 1 September 2015
