Summary of key issues:

  • During the week ending 29 April 2015 rainfall was mainly restricted to the far south east of the continent and isolated areas in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
  • Rainfall received over parts of western and eastern Australia during recent weeks has improved production conditions for crop and livestock producers.
  • Maximum and minimum temperatures were predominantly below average across much of Australia during the week ending 28 April 2015.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology has indicated that El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) indicators in the tropical Pacific are approaching or have reached El Niño levels.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that heavier rainfall is more likely across parts of western and eastern Australia.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin have increased by 22 gigalitres this week and are at 39 per cent of total capacity.
  • The Queensland young cattle indicator price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 439 cents a kilogram in the week ending 24 April 2015.
  • The saleyard indicator prices of lamb (18–22kg fat score 2–4) rose across all states in the week ending 24 April 2015.
  • The wool indicator price (EMI) averaged 1153 cents a kilogram (clean) in the week ending 23 April, compared with 1130 cents a kilogram in the previous week.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$231 a tonne in the week ending 28 April 2015.
