Last week saw the Reserve Bank of Australia release the images for the new $5 note featuring native wattle. The note comes into circulation from 1 September this year (National Wattle Day).

Our entire range of banknotes will be updated in future to include a new tactile feature that allows vision-impaired people to distinguish between the different denominations. The updated notes will have a "fresh, modern feel" but will retain the existing colour, size and people portrayed on each denomination.

While opinions of the new $5 note vary from ‘okay’ to ‘appalling’, it is the stories behind the banknotes and the people featured on them that are the most interesting. You can make up your own mind on the first to be updated….
