Summary of key issues:

  • In the week ending 8 October 2014, rainfall in excess of 15 millimetres was recorded in the southwest of Western Australia, western and northern Tasmania, parts of Victoria and southern New South Wales and isolated areas in southern Queensland.
  • Relative upper level soil moisture for September 2014 was extremely low to below average across most of the cropping zone in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
  • The latest Bureau of Meteorology drought statement indicates that below average rainfall during August and September 2014 has contributed to widespread rainfall deficiencies across south eastern Australia in the three months ending September 2014.
  • Tropical Pacific Ocean El Niño Southern Oscillation indicators remain within the neutral range.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) decreased this week by 193 gigalitres (GL) and are at 66 per cent of total capacity.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) averaged US$283 a tonne in the week ending 7 October 2014.
    The Australian grain sorghum indicator price (Sydney) was $320 a tonne in the week ending 8 October 2014.
  • The Queensland young cattle indictor price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 377 cents a kilogram in the week ending 3 October 2014.
  • The saleyard indicator price of lamb (18–22kg fat score 2–4) fell in all states in the week ending 3 October 2014.
