Summary of key issues:

  • Rainfall during the week ending 1 June 2016 was recorded in all states and territories.
  • For the week ending 31 May 2016, maximum temperatures were generally above average across northern Australia, and below average across southern Australia.
  • A special climate statement released by the Bureau of Meteorology on 1 June 2016 reports that autumn 2016 was Australia’s warmest on record.
  • Following a particularly dry April, rainfall in May 2016 was generally above average for much of central, south-eastern, and northern Australia.
  • Relative upper layer soil moisture for May 2016 was generally above average across much of Australia.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that rainfall is expected for most of Australia.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased by 183 gigalitres (GL) during the week ending 2 June 2016 to 7 186 GL and are at 32 per cent of total capacity.
  • The young cattle indicator price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 571 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Queensland in the week ending 27 May 2016.
  • The lamb indicator price (18–22kg fat score 2–4) averaged 598 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Victoria in the week ending 27 May 2016.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) was US$197 a tonne in the week ending 31 May 2016.
