Summary of key issues:

  • During the week ending 20 July 2016, rainfall was mainly restricted to northern, eastern and southwestern Australia.
  • Heavy rainfall in excess of 100 millimetres was recorded along Queensland’s central and northern coast and parts of the interior this week.
  • For the week ending 19 July 2016, maximum temperatures were generally average across much of western and southern Australia.
  • International reports indicate that June 2016 was globally the warmest June on record and marks the 14th consecutive month that the monthly global temperature record has been broken.
  • The forecast for the next eight days indicates that little to no rain is expected for much of mainland Australia.
  • El Niño–Southern Oscillation indicators in the Pacific Ocean remain at neutral levels.
  • Water storage levels in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) increased by 519 gigalitres (GL) during the week ending 21 July 2016.
  • The young cattle indicator price (330–400 kg live weight C3) averaged 655 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Victoria in the week ending 15 July 2016.
  • The lamb indicator price (18–22kg fat score 2–4) averaged 661 cents a kilogram (dressed weight) in Victoria in the week ending 15 July 2016.
  • The world wheat indicator price (US No. 2 hard red winter, free on board Gulf ports) was US$190 a tonne in the week ending 19 July 2016.
